Which brings us back to Spider-Man.¿ With Tobey Maguire being the only actor cast in a major role so far, the film had little chance of meeting its original start date of October, 2000.¿ Numerous actors have been mentioned for the part of Norman Osborne / Green Goblin, including Nicolas Cage (who has been mentioned for every super hero film so far ¿ see our story yesterday concerning Ghost Rider) and John Malkovich.¿ Thus far, no favorites have emerged for the parts of Spidey's girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson, or for the role of Flash Thompson, Peter Parker's high school nemesis.¿ Starting principal photography in January is risky but director Sam Raimi is well known for being able to shoot on schedule, so it's possible all of the footage could be shot before the strike hits.¿ By moving back the release date, Raimi has time to complete re-shoots if necessary.¿ As the strike won't affect most of the post production process, the idea is to get the principal photography done and worry about any problems in post.¿ It can be a risky strategy ¿ no amount of post production can fix a film that wasn't shot correctly in the first place. Looming on the Hollywood horizon is the possibility of what could be a very ugly strike by the Screen Actor's Guild and the Writer's Guild of America.¿¿ Because members of both unions will be prohibited from working during the strike, a number of producers are working quickly to get films in the can before the strike hits. Sony's press release claims that the later release date ensures the film adequate post production time for what is bound to be a very complicated film.¿ While it's always a good thing to have more time in post, FilmForce has learned that other factors have contributed to the delay.
